Making Promises

Friends of mine recently had a committment ceremony. It was nice. It's stupid that there couldn't be a wedding, but we live in a stupid country. We are at war, after all. How stupid is that? Anyway, there was laughing and crying and music and dancing. A good time was had by all. I hope they stay together forever. My cynical side always wonders about that when I am sitting at a ceremony and listening to the promises that are made that day. These two might actually make it. I hope so. But, so many people seem to put the ceremony right out of their heads within months of that special day. When I hear how some couples speak to each other, I sometimes cringe. What would make people treat their partners like something stuck to the bottom of their shoes? I don't get it. If you are with someone, you are telling the world that this is the person you have chosen. When you deride them, criticize them, shame them and blame them, it says a lot more about you than it does about them.
